Community Care Initiative · October
Farmers, Ag & Food Production
Supporting the people who feed West Michigan.
This group is honored each October. The $56 New Patient Special is available to new patients year-round — see who's featured this month.
Ottawa, Allegan, and Van Buren counties grow a remarkable share of Michigan's food — blueberries, apples, celery, dairy, poultry, and the greenhouses that ring Zeeland and Hudsonville.
Harvest is a marathon of bending, lifting, climbing, and tractor hours. Food processing adds cold rooms, line speed, and repetitive motion at a fixed station.
As the harvest wraps up, October is theirs.

What the work does
Why this job shows up in your spine.
Every profession loads the body a specific way. Here's what we see most in this group.
Tractor and cab hours
Whole-body vibration plus a twisted seated posture is hard on discs and the mid back.
Bent-over work
Hours of picking, planting, and sorting keeps the low back loaded at its weakest angle.
Line repetition
The same motion thousands of times a shift is how wrists, elbows, and shoulders wear out.
Conditions we treat
What we most often help with in this group.
Low Back Pain
Low back pain is the single most common reason people walk into our clinics, and it's also the most commonly mistreated. Rest and ibuprofen quiet the symptom for a few days, but if a joint isn't moving or a disc is loaded unevenly, the pain keeps coming back.

Degenerative Disc Disease
"Degenerative disc disease" is one of the most frightening phrases on a radiology report and one of the least useful. It describes discs that have dried out and thinned — extremely common with age, and only sometimes the source of pain. What matters is whether the segment moves and whether the nerves are clear.

Wrist & Hand Pain
Your wrist is eight small bones that need to glide against each other. When a few of them stop moving properly, the tendons crossing the joint take up the slack and become irritated — producing pain that never quite settles with rest.

Shoulder Pain & Rotator Cuff
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which means it depends on muscle control rather than bone structure for stability. When the rotator cuff or the shoulder blade stops doing its job, tendons get pinched under the bone above them — and reaching overhead becomes a project.

Questions
Farmers & food production: common questions
Harvest doesn't leave me time. Can I come later in the year?
The $56 visit is available year-round — October is just when we spotlight ag. Come when the season lets you.
Does my whole crew qualify?
Yes, though appointments are limited each month. Have each person submit their own request.
Who qualifies?
Anyone who is part of the community group we're currently featuring. Each month recognizes a different profession or role. Both new patients and existing Back To Health patients from that group are welcome to participate.
What does the visit cost?
New patients in the honored group get our $56 New Patient Special — consultation and exam, digital X-rays if clinically needed, and your report of findings. That's it. No deposit, no hidden fees, and nothing due before you arrive.
Is there a deposit?
No. There is no deposit and no prepayment. You pay $56 at the clinic on the day of your visit.
Can I nominate someone?
Yes — and we love when people do. Use the Nominate Someone form to tell us about a coworker, friend, or family member who deserves to be recognized. We'll reach out gently and let them decide if it's right for them.
Can I nominate myself?
Absolutely. If you're part of the group we're currently honoring, just complete the reservation form.
How do I reserve a spot?
Complete the short reservation form and choose the clinic closest to you. You'll be sent straight to that clinic's online scheduling page to pick your time, and our team will confirm.
