Low Back Pain Relief in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon

Low back pain that won't quit? Our West Michigan chiropractors find the joint, disc or muscle actually driving it — then treat the cause, not just the ache.

Low back pain is the single most common reason people walk into our clinics, and it's also the most commonly mistreated. Rest and ibuprofen quiet the symptom for a few days, but if a joint isn't moving or a disc is loaded unevenly, the pain keeps coming back.

Symptoms we hear about

  • Deep ache across the belt line that worsens as the day goes on
  • Sharp catch when standing up from a chair or getting out of the car
  • Stiffness in the morning that loosens after 20-30 minutes of moving
  • Pain that shifts to one side, sometimes into the hip or buttock
  • Feeling like your back could "go out" if you twist wrong

What's usually driving it

Most low back pain comes from the lumbar joints and discs losing normal motion — often after years of sitting, lifting with a rounded back, or one memorable moment where something gave out. When those segments stop gliding, surrounding muscles guard, the discs load unevenly, and nearby nerves get irritated. Pain is the end of that chain, not the beginning.

How we treat low back pain

  1. 01A full exam including motion palpation, orthopedic testing and neurological screening, so we know which segment is the problem
  2. 02Specific lumbar and pelvic adjustments to restore movement where it's been lost
  3. 03Soft tissue work and myofascial release for the guarding muscles around the joint
  4. 04Spinal decompression when a disc is involved and nerve pressure needs unloading
  5. 05Corrective exercise and lifting/sitting coaching so the same segment doesn't relapse

FAQ

Low Back Pain: common questions

How many visits before my low back pain improves?

Most patients notice a meaningful change within the first two to four visits. A full corrective plan for a back that's been hurting for years takes longer, and we'll give you a realistic timeline at your report of findings rather than an open-ended schedule.

Do I need an MRI first?

Usually not. We image when the exam points to disc involvement, nerve damage or something outside the scope of chiropractic care. If you need it, we'll say so and refer.

Is it safe to be adjusted when my back is in spasm?

Yes. When you're acutely locked up we often start with soft tissue work, gentle mobilization and electrical stimulation to calm the spasm, then adjust once the tissue lets us.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.

Do you take insurance?

We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.

How soon can I get in?

Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
