Degenerative Disc Disease Care in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon

Disc degeneration on your imaging doesn't mean a lifetime of pain. We restore motion, unload the segment and build support at our West Michigan clinics.

"Degenerative disc disease" is one of the most frightening phrases on a radiology report and one of the least useful. It describes discs that have dried out and thinned — extremely common with age, and only sometimes the source of pain. What matters is whether the segment moves and whether the nerves are clear.

Symptoms we hear about

  • Chronic, nagging back or neck ache with occasional sharp flare-ups
  • Stiffness that's worst in the morning and after long sitting
  • Better with movement, worse with staying in one position
  • Occasional radiating symptoms when a flare compresses a nerve
  • Reduced height or a sense of "settling" in the spine

What's usually driving it

Discs have almost no blood supply — they get nutrients from motion. When segments stop moving normally, the disc dehydrates faster than it should, loses height, and shifts load onto the facet joints behind it. That's why degeneration is usually concentrated at one or two levels rather than spread evenly: those are the segments that quit moving years ago.

How we treat degenerative disc disease

  1. 01Motion assessment to find which levels have lost mobility and which are compensating
  2. 02Specific adjustments to reintroduce motion and nutrient exchange at the involved levels
  3. 03Decompression therapy to rehydrate discs and reduce facet loading
  4. 04Soft tissue work for the chronically guarded paraspinal muscles
  5. 05Long-term maintenance strategy — mobility, strength and periodic care to slow progression

What your first visit looks like

Three steps, no guessing

01

Exam & history

A real evaluation — orthopedic, neurological and movement testing — so we know exactly what's generating your symptoms.

02

Report of findings

We tell you what we found, whether we can help, how long it should take, and what it costs. No open-ended plans.

03

Treat & rebuild

Adjustments plus the therapies your case actually needs, followed by the rehab that keeps it from coming back.

FAQ

Degenerative Disc Disease: common questions

Is degeneration reversible?

The disc height and bone changes generally aren't. The pain, stiffness and nerve irritation very often are, because those come from lost motion and inflammation rather than from the degeneration itself.

Should I stop exercising?

No — motion is what feeds a disc. We'll steer you away from heavy loaded flexion and toward walking, swimming and controlled strength work.

Will I need care forever?

Many patients with multi-level degeneration choose periodic maintenance visits because staying mobile keeps flare-ups from starting. It's your call, and we'll be straight with you about what your spine actually needs.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.

Do you take insurance?

We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.

How soon can I get in?

Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
