TMJ & Jaw Pain Treatment in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon

Clicking, aching or locking jaw? We treat the TMJ and the upper cervical mechanics behind it at our Zeeland, Portage and Muskegon clinics.

The jaw joint doesn't work in isolation — it sits directly on top of the upper cervical spine and shares muscles with the neck and skull. That's why so many TMJ cases improve when the neck is addressed alongside the jaw itself.

Symptoms we hear about

  • Clicking, popping or grinding when you open and close
  • Aching in front of the ear or along the jawline
  • Difficulty opening wide, or the jaw catching and locking
  • Headaches at the temples, plus ear fullness or ringing
  • Morning soreness from clenching or grinding overnight

What's usually driving it

Most TMJ dysfunction is a combination of overworked chewing muscles, a disc inside the joint that isn't tracking, and upper cervical restriction changing the resting position of the mandible. Stress-driven clenching keeps loading the joint 24 hours a day, which is why it doesn't settle on its own.

How we treat tmj & jaw pain

  1. 01Jaw motion, tracking and muscle assessment plus an upper cervical exam
  2. 02Gentle TMJ mobilization and specific upper cervical adjustments
  3. 03Intra- and extra-oral soft tissue release for the masseter, temporalis and pterygoids
  4. 04Clenching and posture awareness training, plus dental co-management for splints when needed
  5. 05Home jaw tracking and relaxation exercises

FAQ

TMJ & Jaw Pain: common questions

Should I see a dentist or a chiropractor?

Often both. Dentists handle bite and splint therapy; we handle joint mechanics, muscle tension and the cervical contribution. Cases with both addressed tend to do best.

Will the clicking go away?

Sometimes. Clicking from a disc that's slightly off-track often reduces as muscle tone normalizes. Painless clicking on its own isn't necessarily something we need to chase.

Is TMJ treatment uncomfortable?

The muscle release around the jaw can be tender because those muscles are overworked. We work within your tolerance and it settles quickly.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.

Do you take insurance?

We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.

How soon can I get in?

Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
