Conditions we treat
Tension Headache Relief in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon
Daily band-like head pressure isn't something to medicate around. We treat the neck and shoulder mechanics driving tension headaches at three West Michigan clinics.
Tension headaches feel like a band tightening around the head or a vise at the temples. Most people manage them with ibuprofen for years without anyone examining the neck — which is where the pattern almost always starts.
Symptoms we hear about
- Dull, pressing pain on both sides of the head
- Tightness at the base of the skull, temples and forehead
- Builds through the workday, worst late afternoon
- Tender knots in the upper traps and along the shoulder blades
- Eye strain and difficulty concentrating as it intensifies
What's usually driving it
Sustained low-level contraction in the neck and shoulder muscles — from screen posture, stress or a stiff upper spine — irritates the pain-sensitive tissues that share pathways with the nerves supplying your head. The muscles are contracting to stabilize joints that aren't moving well, so releasing the muscle alone gives a day of relief at most.
How we treat tension headaches
- 01Cervical and thoracic exam to identify the restricted segments feeding the pattern
- 02Specific upper cervical and upper thoracic adjustments
- 03Trigger point and myofascial release for the suboccipitals, traps and levator scapulae
- 04Screen and workstation adjustments to cut the daily load
- 05Deep neck flexor and scapular strengthening so posture holds without effort

FAQ
Tension Headaches: common questions
How quickly do tension headaches respond to care?
Many patients see frequency drop within the first two weeks. Long-standing daily headaches tied to years of posture take longer, but the trend usually shows early.
Are these the same as migraines?
No. Tension headaches are pressing and bilateral without nausea or aura. Migraines are typically one-sided, throbbing and light-sensitive. Plenty of people get both, and we treat what the exam shows.
Could my headaches be caused by something serious?
Headaches with sudden onset, fever, neurological changes or a distinctly different pattern than usual get screened and referred. That's part of every headache exam we do.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.
Do you take insurance?
We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.
How soon can I get in?
Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
