Conditions we treat
Stress-Related Muscle Tension Relief in West Michigan
Stress lives in your neck, jaw and shoulders. We release the physical tension pattern and restore the joint motion it's been restricting.
Stress produces a real, measurable physical pattern: shoulders up, jaw clenched, breathing shallow and high in the chest. Held for months, that pattern stiffens joints and produces pain that no amount of stress management alone will resolve.
Symptoms we hear about
- Constant tightness across the shoulders and neck
- Jaw clenching or teeth grinding, especially at night
- Shallow, chest-dominant breathing
- Tension headaches by evening
- Difficulty relaxing physically even when you're resting
What's usually driving it
Under sustained stress, the nervous system keeps postural muscles partially contracted and shifts breathing from the diaphragm to the neck and chest muscles. Those neck muscles were never designed for full-time breathing duty, so they fatigue and refer pain. Meanwhile the thoracic spine and ribs stop moving well, reinforcing the whole pattern.
How we treat stress & muscle tension
- 01Assessment of the tension pattern, breathing mechanics and joint restriction
- 02Cervical, thoracic and rib adjusting to restore motion where guarding has locked things down
- 03Soft tissue therapy, cupping and trigger point work for the neck, jaw and shoulder girdle
- 04Diaphragmatic breathing retraining
- 05Practical daily strategies — movement breaks, sleep positioning, screen limits

FAQ
Stress & Muscle Tension: common questions
Can chiropractic care help with stress itself?
It addresses the physical side — the tension, the restricted joints, the breathing pattern. Many patients report feeling calmer afterward, and reducing physical tension makes the mental side more manageable.
Why do my shoulders never relax?
Sustained contraction becomes the muscle's new resting length, and the joints underneath stiffen to match. Both need to be addressed for the tension to actually let go.
Is massage enough?
Massage helps and we use soft tissue therapy ourselves. Combining it with restoring joint motion is what makes the relief last longer than a day.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.
Do you take insurance?
We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.
How soon can I get in?
Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
