Conditions we treat
Cervicogenic Headache Treatment in West Michigan
Headaches that start in the neck and wrap forward respond exceptionally well to chiropractic care. We treat the upper cervical cause at all three clinics.
A cervicogenic headache is a headache whose source is the neck. It's the headache type chiropractic care addresses most directly, because the generator is a joint we can actually treat.
Symptoms we hear about
- Pain that begins at the base of the skull and travels forward over one side
- Almost always the same side, every time
- Triggered or worsened by neck movement or sustained positions
- Reduced neck rotation on the painful side
- Occasional pain behind the eye or in the temple
What's usually driving it
The upper three cervical nerves converge with the trigeminal nerve in the brainstem. Your brain can't distinguish input from an irritated C1-C2 joint from input coming from your forehead or eye, so it projects the pain to your head. Fix the joint and the referral stops.
How we treat cervicogenic headaches
- 01Upper cervical assessment including rotation testing and joint palpation to reproduce the referral
- 02Specific upper cervical adjustments — manual, drop table or instrument-assisted
- 03Suboccipital release and myofascial work
- 04Cervical traction when disc or forward-head loading is contributing
- 05Deep neck flexor retraining and workstation changes

FAQ
Cervicogenic Headaches: common questions
How do I know my headaches are coming from my neck?
One-sided pain that starts at the skull base, reproduces with neck positions, and comes with limited rotation is the classic pattern. During the exam we usually reproduce your exact headache by loading the involved joint.
How many visits does it take?
This type tends to respond quickly — often noticeable change in two to four visits, with a short corrective plan to keep it from returning.
Do I need imaging?
Not for a typical presentation. We image when there's trauma history, neurological findings or a pattern that doesn't fit.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.
Do you take insurance?
We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.
How soon can I get in?
Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
