Conditions we treat
Neck Pain Chiropractic Care in West Michigan
Stiff, aching or locked-up neck? We treat the cervical joints, discs and muscles behind neck pain at our Zeeland, Portage and Muskegon clinics.
Neck pain rarely stays in the neck. It spreads into the shoulders, creeps up the back of the skull and shows up as headaches by mid-afternoon. The good news: the cervical spine responds quickly once the right segment starts moving again.
Symptoms we hear about
- Tightness at the base of the skull and across the tops of the shoulders
- Limited ability to turn your head, especially backing out of a driveway
- Pain that flares after a day at a screen or a night on the wrong pillow
- Grinding or popping sensations with movement
- Headaches that start in the neck and wrap forward
What's usually driving it
The lower cervical joints take the load of a forward head posture — every inch your head drifts forward multiplies the weight your neck muscles carry. Over time those joints stiffen, the upper cervical segments compensate by moving too much, and the nerves exiting the neck get irritated. That's the pattern behind most "I just woke up with it" neck pain.
How we treat neck pain
- 01Cervical exam with range-of-motion, joint-by-joint palpation and nerve screening
- 02Specific cervical and upper thoracic adjustments to restore normal motion
- 03Soft tissue release for the suboccipitals, levator scapulae and upper traps
- 04Traction or decompression when a cervical disc is contributing
- 05Posture and workstation coaching, plus deep neck flexor strengthening

FAQ
Neck Pain: common questions
I don't like my neck being twisted. Are there other options?
Yes. We use several techniques including instrument-assisted adjusting and drop-table work that get the same result without a rotational manual adjustment. Tell your doctor and they'll choose accordingly.
Why does my neck pain cause headaches?
Nerves from the upper three cervical segments share a pathway with the nerves that supply your head and face. When those joints are irritated, your brain reads it as head pain — a pattern called a cervicogenic headache.
Will a new pillow fix it?
A supportive pillow helps you stop re-irritating the problem, but it won't restore motion to a joint that's already stuck. Fix the joint first, then keep it that way with better sleep support.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.
Do you take insurance?
We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.
How soon can I get in?
Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
