Conditions we treat
Tennis Elbow Treatment in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon
Outer elbow pain with gripping is lateral epicondylitis. We treat it with soft tissue work, SoftWave shockwave therapy and load-based rehab.
Most people with tennis elbow have never played tennis. It's a tendon problem at the outside of the elbow, driven by gripping and wrist extension — which describes almost every trade, hobby and desk job in West Michigan.
Symptoms we hear about
- Sharp pain on the bony outside of the elbow
- Pain gripping a coffee cup, shaking hands or turning a doorknob
- Weak grip strength that fails suddenly
- Tenderness to the touch over a small, precise spot
- Ache radiating down the top of the forearm
What's usually driving it
The wrist extensor tendons anchor to a small area on the outside of the elbow. Repeated gripping loads that anchor point, and when the tendon's repair rate falls behind the damage rate the tissue becomes disorganized rather than inflamed. That distinction matters: this is a tendon that has stopped healing, not one that needs anti-inflammatories.
How we treat tennis elbow
- 01Assessment of the elbow, wrist, shoulder and neck — grip mechanics start upstream
- 02Instrument-assisted soft tissue work and myofascial release along the extensor group
- 03SoftWave shockwave therapy to restart a healing response in stalled tendon tissue
- 04Elbow, wrist and cervical adjusting where motion is restricted
- 05Progressive eccentric loading — the single most evidence-backed rehab for this tendon

FAQ
Tennis Elbow: common questions
Why hasn't rest fixed it?
Rest reduces pain but doesn't rebuild tendon structure, so symptoms return the moment you grip again. Tendons need progressive load — carefully dosed — to remodel.
Do braces work?
A counterforce strap can offload the tendon enough to get you through work days. It's a helpful tool, not a treatment.
How long until I'm back to normal?
Six to twelve weeks is typical for a case that's been going on for months. Shockwave often accelerates cases that have already failed other care.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.
Do you take insurance?
We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.
How soon can I get in?
Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
