Trigger Point & Muscle Knot Treatment in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon

Knots that keep coming back are trigger points guarding a joint. We release the muscle and fix the restriction underneath so it stays released.

A trigger point is a tight, irritable band inside a muscle that hurts locally and refers pain elsewhere. Rubbing it feels great for a day. It comes back because the muscle is guarding something — usually a joint that isn't moving.

Symptoms we hear about

  • A tender knot you can find with a finger, in the same spot every time
  • Pain that refers in a predictable pattern — shoulder blade to arm, hip to thigh
  • Temporary relief from pressure, massage or a foam roller
  • Muscle that feels permanently tight no matter how much you stretch
  • Reduced strength or range in that muscle group

What's usually driving it

Muscles contract to protect joints they don't trust. If a thoracic segment or a shoulder joint isn't moving well, the muscles crossing it stay partially contracted around the clock, oxygen delivery to those fibers drops, and a taut band forms. That's why the same knot returns to the same location after every massage.

How we treat myofascial trigger points

  1. 01Finding the joint restriction driving the guarding, not just the knot
  2. 02Trigger point therapy, myofascial release and cupping to release the taut band
  3. 03Instrument-assisted soft tissue work for fascial restriction
  4. 04Specific adjusting of the underlying segment
  5. 05Strengthening and postural change so the muscle no longer needs to guard

FAQ

Myofascial Trigger Points: common questions

Why do my knots always come back?

Because the joint they're protecting hasn't changed. Release plus adjustment plus strengthening is what makes it stick.

Is trigger point work supposed to hurt?

It's usually a "good hurt" — recognizable, reproducing your symptom — and it fades in seconds. We stay within your tolerance.

Can I just use a massage gun?

It's a useful tool between visits for symptom relief. It won't restore joint motion, so use it as maintenance rather than treatment.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.

Do you take insurance?

We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.

How soon can I get in?

Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
