Mid-Back & Rib Pain Treatment in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon

Sharp pain between the shoulder blades or a rib that feels stuck? We treat thoracic and rib joint dysfunction at all three Back To Health clinics.

Mid-back pain gets dismissed as "just tension," but a stuck rib joint produces some of the sharpest, most breath-limiting pain we see. It's also one of the fastest problems to resolve once the right segment is adjusted.

Symptoms we hear about

  • Knife-like pain between or under the shoulder blades
  • Pain that catches when you take a deep breath, cough or sneeze
  • A band of tightness that wraps around the ribcage
  • Relief from pressing a ball into the spot — but only temporarily
  • Stiffness that builds after long hours hunched at a desk or steering wheel

What's usually driving it

Each thoracic vertebra articulates with a pair of ribs. Sustained rounded posture, a hard sneeze or an awkward reach can jam one of those rib joints, and the muscles between the ribs clamp down to protect it. Massage feels good but doesn't unjam the joint, which is why the knot always comes back to the same spot.

How we treat mid-back & rib pain

  1. 01Rib and thoracic joint assessment to find the exact segment that isn't gliding
  2. 02Specific thoracic and costovertebral adjustments
  3. 03Soft tissue and cupping work for the intercostal and scapular muscles
  4. 04Breathing mechanics work so the ribcage moves instead of the neck
  5. 05Thoracic extension and scapular strengthening to hold the correction

FAQ

Mid-Back & Rib Pain: common questions

Could this be something other than my back?

Mid-back and rib pain can occasionally refer from the heart, lungs, gallbladder or stomach. Our exam screens for those patterns, and we refer immediately if anything doesn't behave like a joint problem.

Why does massage only help for a day?

The muscle tightness is a symptom of the joint restriction underneath. Release the muscle and it re-tightens to protect the joint. Restore the joint and the muscle stays relaxed.

Is the popping sound normal?

Yes. That sound is gas releasing from the joint capsule as it opens, not bones cracking. It isn't a measure of how well the adjustment worked.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.

Do you take insurance?

We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.

How soon can I get in?

Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
