Conditions we treat
Muscle Strain Treatment in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon
Pulled a muscle lifting, shoveling or playing? We grade the strain and get you through healing without losing strength or motion.
A muscle strain is torn muscle fiber — it needs a healing timeline, not a magic fix. What good care does is protect the tissue early, restore motion at the right moment, and rebuild strength so it doesn't become a recurring injury.
Symptoms we hear about
- Sudden sharp pain during an effort — lifting, sprinting, twisting
- Immediate weakness in that movement
- Bruising or swelling over the following day or two
- A tender, sometimes palpable spot within the muscle
- Pain on stretching or contracting the involved muscle
What's usually driving it
Strains happen when demand exceeds what the muscle can handle in that instant — often when fatigued, cold or already tight. Restricted joints nearby increase the load a muscle has to absorb, which is one reason people re-strain the same hamstring or low back repeatedly. Scar tissue laid down without proper loading is stiffer and weaker than the original fiber.
How we treat muscle strains & pulls
- 01Grading the strain and ruling out a complete tear or bone involvement
- 02Early phase: protection, electrical stimulation and gentle pain-free motion
- 03Soft tissue therapy and instrument-assisted work to guide scar tissue as it forms
- 04Adjusting the restricted joints that overloaded the muscle in the first place
- 05Progressive eccentric strengthening before you return to full activity

FAQ
Muscle Strains & Pulls: common questions
Ice or heat?
Ice in the first day or two for a fresh strain with swelling; heat afterward to increase blood flow before movement. Neither replaces getting the tissue loading again.
How long until I can play or lift again?
Mild strains often two to three weeks; moderate ones six or more. We use strength and pain-free range testing rather than the calendar.
Why do I keep straining the same muscle?
Usually because strength was never fully restored, or because a nearby joint restriction keeps overloading it. We address both.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.
