Conditions we treat
Whiplash Treatment in Zeeland, Portage & Muskegon
Whiplash injures ligaments and joint capsules, not just muscles. We restore cervical motion properly so it doesn't become a chronic neck problem.
Whiplash is a ligament and joint capsule injury in the neck caused by a rapid acceleration-deceleration force. Treated properly it resolves. Ignored, it becomes the chronic neck pain and headaches people carry for decades.
Symptoms we hear about
- Neck stiffness and pain that worsened over the first two days
- Headaches from the base of the skull
- Pain radiating into the shoulders and between the blades
- Dizziness, ringing in the ears or difficulty concentrating
- Jaw pain and difficulty swallowing in more severe cases
What's usually driving it
The neck goes through a whip-like motion faster than the muscles can protect it, overstretching the small ligaments and joint capsules of the cervical spine. Those tissues heal with scar tissue that's less elastic than the original, so if the joints aren't kept moving during healing, the segments end up permanently stiff — and the segments above and below take over, wearing out early.
How we treat whiplash
- 01Detailed cervical exam including ligament stability testing and neurological screening
- 02Early-phase gentle mobilization, electrical stimulation and soft tissue work
- 03Specific cervical adjusting as tissue tolerance allows, restoring segment-by-segment motion
- 04Cervical traction or decompression when a disc is involved
- 05Deep neck flexor and postural rehab, with documentation throughout for insurance

FAQ
Whiplash: common questions
How long does whiplash take to heal?
Mild cases six to eight weeks; more significant cases three months or longer. Consistent care during the healing window is what determines whether you end up with residual stiffness.
My X-rays were normal. So why do I hurt?
X-rays show bone, not ligaments, discs or joint capsules — which is exactly what whiplash injures. Normal imaging is expected and doesn't mean nothing happened.
Is it too late if my accident was months ago?
No. Chronic whiplash still responds to restoring cervical motion and rebuilding neck strength, though it takes longer than early care would have.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.
Do you take insurance?
We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.
How soon can I get in?
Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
