Facet Joint Pain Treatment in West Michigan

Localized back pain that bites when you arch or twist is often facet joint syndrome. We restore joint motion and calm the inflammation around it.

Facet joints are the small paired joints that link one vertebra to the next. When one becomes inflamed or restricted, the pain is typically sharp, close to the spine, and worse arching backward — a very different picture from disc pain.

Symptoms we hear about

  • Pain within an inch or two of the spine, on one side
  • Worse leaning backward or twisting toward the painful side
  • Better sitting or bending forward
  • Stiff and sore first thing in the morning, easier once moving
  • Referred ache into the buttock or shoulder blade, but not down the limb

What's usually driving it

Facets are designed to guide motion, not carry load. When a disc thins or a neighboring segment stops moving, the facets pick up weight they weren't built for. The joint capsule — richly supplied with pain fibers — becomes inflamed, and the segment locks to protect itself.

How we treat facet joint syndrome

  1. 01Segment-by-segment palpation and extension/rotation testing to confirm the facet involved
  2. 02Specific adjustments to gap and mobilize the restricted joint
  3. 03Electrical stimulation and soft tissue work to settle acute inflammation
  4. 04Addressing the neighboring stiff segments that overloaded the facet in the first place
  5. 05Core and hip mobility work so extension is shared rather than dumped on one joint

FAQ

Facet Joint Syndrome: common questions

How is facet pain different from a disc problem?

Facet pain is usually local and worse with extension; disc pain is worse with flexion and often radiates into a limb. The exam distinguishes them reliably in most cases.

Do I need an injection?

Facet injections can help stubborn cases, but they don't restore motion. Most patients respond to adjusting and rehab first; if they don't, an injection plus continued care is a reasonable next step.

How fast do facet problems respond?

Often quickly — an acutely locked facet frequently improves substantially within a handful of visits, especially when we also fix the segment above or below that caused it.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.

Do you take insurance?

We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.

How soon can I get in?

Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
