Herniated Disc Treatment Without Surgery in West Michigan
Non-surgical treatment for herniated and bulging discs using spinal decompression, specific adjustments and rehab at our three West Michigan clinics.
A herniated disc sounds like a sentence — it usually isn't. Most disc injuries respond well to unloading the disc, restoring segmental motion and rebuilding the support around it. Surgery is a last resort, not the first stop.
Symptoms we hear about
- Back or neck pain paired with pain, numbness or tingling into a limb
- Symptoms that spike with sitting, bending, coughing or sneezing
- Relief when lying down or walking, worse when static
- Weakness in a specific muscle group — foot drop, weak grip, weak calf
- A sensation of the pain "traveling" further down the limb over time
What's usually driving it
Discs are pressurized shock absorbers. Years of loaded flexion — sitting, bending, lifting rounded — push the inner disc material backward until the outer wall bulges or tears. The material itself is chemically irritating to nerve tissue, so even a small herniation can produce dramatic symptoms if it lands on a nerve root.
How we treat herniated & bulging discs
- 01Exam and, when indicated, imaging referral to confirm the level and severity
- 02Non-surgical spinal decompression to create negative pressure inside the disc
- 03Gentle, specific adjusting of the segments above and below to restore normal load sharing
- 04Flexion-avoidance coaching for sitting, sleeping and lifting during the healing window
- 05Progressive core and hip stabilization once the nerve calms down
Therapies that apply
What your first visit looks like
Three steps, no guessing
01
Exam & history
A real evaluation — orthopedic, neurological and movement testing — so we know exactly what's generating your symptoms.
02
Report of findings
We tell you what we found, whether we can help, how long it should take, and what it costs. No open-ended plans.
03
Treat & rebuild
Adjustments plus the therapies your case actually needs, followed by the rehab that keeps it from coming back.
FAQ
Herniated & Bulging Discs: common questions
Can a herniated disc actually heal?
Yes. Studies following disc herniations over time show many of them shrink or resorb, especially when the segment is unloaded and moving normally. Symptoms typically improve well before the imaging changes.
Is decompression the same as traction?
Traction just pulls. Decompression uses a computer-controlled cycle of pull and release that lets the disc take on fluid without triggering protective muscle guarding — a meaningfully different result.
Will an adjustment make my herniation worse?
Not when it's done with a known diagnosis and appropriate technique. For acute disc cases we start with decompression and low-force methods, and we adjust the neighboring segments rather than driving through the injured one.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No. You can book directly with any of our three clinics in Zeeland, Portage or Norton Shores (Muskegon). If we think you need imaging or another provider, we'll tell you and help coordinate it.
Do you take insurance?
We're in-network with most major plans and we verify your benefits before your first adjustment so there are no surprises. Cash and payment-plan options are available too — see our insurance and payment FAQs.
How soon can I get in?
Most new patients are seen within a few days, not weeks. Book online for the clinic closest to you or call and we'll find the first available exam slot.
